Mangalore, April 26: The Karnataka Assembly elections will play an instrumental role in shaping up the future of the country and the whole nation has its eyes set on the impending polls, said Varun Gandhi, Member of Parliament and BJP's firebrand leader.

He was addressing a public rally to campaign for the party's Bantwal candidate Rajesh Naik at B C Road on Friday.

Stating that one must put the country's interests before personal ones, Mr. Gandhi said that in order to maintain stable and value-based administration, people of the state will have to re-elect BJP to power.

Appealing party workers to put their heart and soul into campaigning for Bantwal candidate Rajesh Naik, Mr. Gandhi said that it was the effort put in by party workers of coastal Karnataka that helped BJP come to power in the state. There is a need to work with the same enthusiasm so that the party continues to maintain hold over the state, he urged.

Claiming that he knows Mr. Naik from several years, Mr. Gandhi said that he is a simpleton and an honest politician. If voted, he will surely work for all sections of society, he opined.

Rai has lost his mind says Kottary

B Ramanath Rai, Congress candidate for Bantwal constituency, has “lost his mind”, Padmanabha Kottary, BJP district President said on the occasion.

Mr. Rai's claim that the battle is not between him and Mr. Naik but rather between him and RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat is condemnable. Such statements do not suit a politician of Mr. Rai's caliber, Mr. Kottary said.

Kota Srinivas Poojary, State Muzrai Minister, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, Capt. Ganesh Karnik, MLC, B Nagaraj Shetty, Former Minister, Rukmayya Poojary, Former MLA, Sulochana GK Bhat, Former State Vice President of the party, were present.

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
