Mangaluru, Sept 19: A surprise raid on the district prison in the heart of Mangaluru on Tuesday morning led to seizure of mobile phones, sharp weapons and narcotics from its cells.

The raid was led by Hanumantharaya, DCP (Law & Order) along with ACPs. Police inspectors and the jail authorities participated in the raid. In total 129 police and 50 officers were part of the raid.

According to sources, the cops seized two mobile phones, three sharp weapons, ganja packets, mobile chargers and other things during the raid.

The raid was conducted after receiving information that weapons and other things were sneaked inside premises, sources said. However, police officials maintained that it was routine exercise.

Few days ago, Navaneeth and Niranjan Bhat---accused in NRI businessman Bhaskar Shetty murder---were attacked by undertrial Bajilakeri Dhanraj and 12 others. They also demanded Rs 5 lakh from the duo. Later, citing threat to their life, accused were shifted to Shivamogga jail.

City police commissioner T R Suresh maintained that the raid was conducted as jail had reported untoward incidents like group clash and ganja supply. Last year, the district jail was raided thrice.
