Mangalore, Feb 16: It was a visual treat for dog-lovers. Mangalore's first open dog show held at Nehru Maidan on Sunday did not fail to delight canine lovers, with as many as 253 four-legged pooches from over 30 breeds participating in the event.
The event was organised by Karavali Canine Club, Mangalore in association with Bangalore Canine Club, Bangalore, and featured dogs from Bangalore, Mumbai and Kerala.
Canines in various shapes, ranging from small to huge, captured the attention of Mangaloreans and kept them riveted as the dogs woofed and barked with delight at the show.
A large Harlequin Great Dane and a huge-ish Saint Bernard from Bangalore were major crowd-pullers, with wide-eyed visitors looking at it in awe.
Also featuring on the show were Rottweilers, Beagles, German and Belgian Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, smooth-coated Dachshunds, Cocker Spaniels, For Terriers, Dobermann Pinschers, Irish Setters, Golden Retrievers, Caravan Hounds and several others. There was also a lone Siberian Husky among the participants of the event.
Apart from competitions such as the best bred dog in different categories, the event also had a junior handling competition wherein dog-handlers exhibited their handling skills with their dogs.
According to one of the organisers Preetam Tukaram, president of the Karavali Canine Club, about 20 per cent of the participating dogs were foreign-bred, and the best eight dogs among the 253 entries would be short-listed for the finals. The best dog in the show will be selected in the final round to represent India at the international level, he said.
He said that the club had been formed and registered under the Canine Club of India a year ago and had close to 40 members so far.
The dogs are judged based on the standard of each particular breed by canine experts of international standards such as Kenneth Chuah from Malaysia, Rajiv Shandilya from Delhi Kennel Club and C V Sudarshan from Chennai, he said.
