Newsroom, Sept 29: After the unopposed election of all three candidates from Congress and JD(S) combine to the Karnataka legislative council, the two ruling parties are now focusing on the members who are to be nominated.
Three posts under the nomination category are vacant because of the resignation of M.D. Lakshminaryana of Congress and the terms of Tara Anuradha and K.B. Shanappa of BJP ending.
As per the understanding, Congress can suggest two and its coalition partner JD(S) will get one post.
Sources in the Congress said that names of Nivedith Alva, son of veteran Congress leader Margaret Alva; former chairman of the Legislative Council V.R. Sudarshan; writer Baraguru Ramachandrappa, and former chairman of Kannada Development Authority Mukhyamantri Chandru are being discussed.
“The names of Mr Ramachandrappa is supported by G. Parameshwara and Mr. Mukhyamantri Chandru is Siddaramaiah’s candidate,” said a senior Congress leader.
The JD(S) leadership is learnt to be considering the names of H. Sudarshan, social worker and tribal rights activist, and K.V. Amarnath, social worker. There is also a possibility of nominating former MLC Ramesh Babu or Y.S.V. Datta, according to sources.
Under Article 171 of the Constitution, the Governor nominates members having special knowledge or practical experience in literature, science, art, cooperative movement, and social service, to the Council based on government recommendation.
