Bengaluru, Jan 15: A 34-year-old woman was cheated of over Rs 25 lakh by a man she met on a matrimonial website.
According to police, Rekha (name changed), a resident of Sarjapur Road, came across Ronith Malhotra on the portal in January 2018. Ronith claimed he was a software engineer in Delhi. Within a few days, the two decided to tie the knot. In February, he flew down to Bengaluru and met the woman at a flat in Mantri Lights apartment complex in Dollars Colony, JP Nagar.
He told Rekha she had to give him a sari, earrings and cash worth Rs 7.5 lakh as part of ritual in his family. In March, he visited Bengaluru again and took another Rs 6 lakh from the woman stating that he had to go to Darjeeling, where his mother had died.
In the next four days, he got the woman to transfer Rs 8 lakh to him in two transactions, saying he was in dire need of money. Ronith also got her to give him her Aadhaar and Pan cards. In May, he came to Bengaluru and took another Rs 4.3 lakh from her.
Rekha realized she had been cheated only after Ronith turned incommunicado. Her emails to him too did not elicit a reply. Puttenahalli police said the case was initially reported at Varthur police station and later transferred to them. “We have summoned the woman to get more details but she hasn’t turned up,” they added.
