Mangalore, Dec 20: A woman who was tortured by her husband over the last 20 years and was kept in captivity over the last four years was finally rescued from the gruesome clutches of her husband on Thursday, from the couple's residence at Ajar near Kateel.
The victim is Sulochana (48) and with reliable information from certain sources that Sulochana is being tortured by her husband, officials of Women and Child Welfare Department with the help of Mannabettu GP members and Mulky police plunged into action and barged into the house.
The team was shocked to see Sulochana tied and left in the corner of the house by her husband Madhava Poojary (55).
Without sufficient food to eat and with constant beatings, Sulochana was evidently weak and fragile.
Sulochana, who hails from Kallianpur, Udupi, got married to Madhava Poojary in Mumbai 23 years ago.
Though the marriage had no problems initially, Madhav leaving his job in Mumbai and settling in Ajar started creating trouble.
As per Sulochana, he was pretending to be a decent and a respectable man outside but at home he used to be a very different person.
He had harassed her mother and younger sister and had chased them away from the house.
As per the locals Madhava has been assaulting his wife over the last 20 years, but four years ago, he crossed all limits and imposed restrictions on Sulochana's movement. He confined her to the house and started assaulting her on her knees so that her mobility is restricted. Due to this her knees are broken.
He used to lock her up in the house and close windows while going out.
“I was not provided enough food. However, some of my neighbours who knew about my plight used to sneak food into the house when he was out,” said Sulochana adding that some neighbours were in support of Madhav.
Officials of the department of women and child development Shyamala, Kalpana, Asha and others got Sulochana admitted to Mulky government hospital.
