Yamunanagar (Haryana), Aug 19: Amid the controversy over triple talaq, a woman here turned the tables on her husband by using the contentious practice to “divorce” him.
Shazia, a mother of three, “divorced” her husband, Abbas, by writing “talaq talaq talaq” on a piece of paper, the police said yesterday.
The woman, a resident of Unhedi village, eloped with her lover, who also happens to be her nephew, they said.
The non-Islamic practice of instant triple talaq is very rarely used by Muslim men to take divorce from their wives. In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court last year had ruled that the extremely rare practice of instant triple talaq among Muslims was “void”, “illegal” and “unconstitutional”.
Ms. Shazia, in a letter to her husband, wrote, “I am divorcing you out of my own free will. I am leaving this house because you tortured me ever since we got married. You would beat me up after getting drunk. Hence, I am taking talaq.”
She added that she was not doing it under anybody’s influence. “Nobody else is responsible,” Ms. Shazia wrote.
