Mangalore, Jan 10: A two-day conference on women literature was organized by in memory of Kamaladevi Chattopadyaya on her 110th birth anniversary at Nehru Maidan on Thursday.

The event was organized by National Book Trust, New Delhi with the collaboration of Konkani Bhasa ani Samskruti Pratistana, Mangalore and Karnataka writers association and Karavali Writers and Readers Association, Mangalore.

Padma Shenoy, senior litterateur delivering her inaugural speech said, “Change in mind set of people helped women in getting educated. Earlier women were not allowed to work at home and they had no social respect. But present the mind sets are changed. Women are educated and earn same as men. Also education level made her to contribute more towards literature in every field,” she said.

She said there is a need to find permanent solution for the challenges faced by women.

Woman is expressing her feelings, struggle through various media. Same time corruption, globalisation and other social areas are becoming subjects to her literary work, she said. Change in social values and morality in society are the worrying trend. Even during such critical condition literature should continue its flow and reveal the truth, she added.

“Recent changes in society and increased crime against woman are the social evils. Such evils make us to protest and they need to be destroyed. We need to work towards social security and healthy society”, said Ms Shenoy stressing the need of children literary work she said, “Children literary works are not in good numbers and they need to be developed more,” she added.

“Some evil powers are trying to hush up the woman voice. This act of corrupt politicians may lead woman to shot dead,” said Prema Bhat. We have seen the values of life. Human being must act according to his words, she added.

Lamenting over the western culture Prema Bhat said, western culture is spoiling the young minds in society. Busy schedule of a working woman is not able to follow up her children. This has led to a major disaster. Human being is not able to keep up his words. Fancy world has taken his mind sets and he has lost the real meaning of life, she said.

Even mobile phones made children to walk away from their goals. Literature must concentrate on this and work in correcting the mistake in society considering the future, she suggested.

Janaki Brahmavar speaking at the occasion said only few youth can be seen in literary field. There is need of more youth in literary work. Usually the litterateur keeps writing. But they never hold discussion meets to exchange their thoughts. Fresh generation has to replace in literary world, she opined.

Dr Vasaundara Bhupati said the education system we have is mark oriented. But not the goal oriented. Civilisation must be judged through their knowledge and habit of gaining literary knowledge. Even people have to be respect for the knowledge they own, she demanded.

Condemning moral policing she said we need to work and decide to stop moral policing. Upcoming valentine day and world women's day have to be a topic of discussion to find end for moral policing, she added.

Meanwhile books written by Padna Shenoy(Vaishaka Ule), Mumtaz Begam(Janara Kategalu), Geetha Shenoy(Kashiyacho Petaro) and Geetha Kini (Nanna aduge) were realesed by Dr Vasaundara Bhupati.

Inauguration session is followed by convention on topics like 'Litterateurs of the Decade, 'Recent attraction towards woman literature', 'Literature and Society”

Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao reminded that V D Savarkar was not against cow slaughter as he himself was non-veg eater, PTI reported on Thursday.

"As a Brahmin he was eating meat, and he was openly propagating eating meat," said the minister at an event in Bengaluru.

Reacting to Gundu Rao's claim, BJP MP Anurag Thakur called Congress a "factory of lies" as he warned that India won't tolerate any disrespect towards Savarkar.

"By disrespecting Veer Savarkar they have shown that they don't respect freedom fighters. During the Congress government, Sardar Bhagat Singh was termed a separatist in textbooks...By making those who want to break the nation join the congress party, Rahul Gandhi is taking forward the ideology of 'tukde tukde' and he is a 'modern Jinnah' who speaks ill of the country abroad...," he said.

Meanwhile, a court in Maharashtra's Nashik district summoned Congress MP Rahul Gandhi earlier this week in a defamation case filed against him for his alleged objectionable remarks against the Hindutva ideologue.

The complainant, who is the director of an NGO, claimed he watched a press conference addressed by Gandhi in Hingoli and also a speech made by the Congress leader in November 2022.

He alleged that Gandhi, on the two occasions, by his words and visual representations knowingly harmed the reputation of Veer Savarkar and also tried to defame the latter's image in the society.

According to the complainant, Gandhi said "Savarkar is BJP and RSS jin" which was defamatory in nature.
