Mangalore, Jan 13: Protests and allegations marred the District Congress Committee (DCC) protest meet here on Sunday as workers staged demonstration against senior party leader B Janardhan Poojary.
The protest meet was orgnised at Gurupur on the outskirts of the city to denounce the provocative speech made by RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and to demand the police to arrest him.
However, when Mr Poojary began to deviate the topic, a few Congress on front row asked him stick to the topic instead of beating around the bush.
Enraged over party workers “interference”, Mr Poojary asked them to calm down and maintain order. It led to a heated exchange of arguments between two groups of Congress workers and Mr Poojary himself involved in argument.
When the situation continued to worsen, Mr Poojary called protesting congress workers as SDPI activists. “You are not from our Congress party. You belong to SDPI,” Mr Poojary told the protesters, who raised voice against him.
Police had to interfere and resorted to mild lathi-charge to bring situation under control. Mr Poojary continued his speech after party workers settled down. Congress leaders V S Ugrappa and B A Mohideen Bava also addressed the protesters.
“Arrest Bhat, protect Bhat”
Many of the Congress workers on the occasion also raised objection for Mr Poojary's previous controversial statement on Kalladka Bhat. Addressing a press meet in Puttur last week, Mr Poojary had not only urged the police to arrest Kalladka Bhat, but also demanded the District administration to provide him security following alleged threat calls.
