Mangaluru, Oct 7: The Dakshina Kannada district police has arrested a man on the charges of impersonating as an accused in a court. The incident took place at the JMFC court in Sullia on Friday when the judge was hearing a case related to an assault that took place in June, 2017.
The court first took the roll call for the presence of three accused from the one group - Siddique, Nawaz and Haris - who were booked for assault under Indian Penal Code Section 324. Later, it started framing the charges against the accused and wanted each and every one of them to sign the documents.
In fact the man who appeared in the court claiming to be Siddique was his younger brother Shareef to appear in the court. The judge smelt something was fishy when he saw there was a mismatch in the signature made by Shareef and that of his accused brother. He then expressed doubt that he was not the real accused.
Shareef argued that he is Siddique, and the two other accused also seconded his claim. However, the judge who was not convinced with their answer, and demanded for valid identity proof by 3pm.
When his parents brought identity proof, it was made clear that Shareef had come in Siddique’s place. The judge asked the police to arrest him and book him for impersonation and misleading the court. He was later arrested and sent in judicial custody.
Sources claimed that accused Siddique had gone abroad a few months ago to avoid legal proceedings, and his brother appeared before the court on his behalf. A case has been registered at Sullia police sation, and an investigation is on.
