Youth attacked with lethal weapons by trouble-mongers

Mangalore, Jan 20: In an apparent act of retaliation, a youth was grievously attacked by a group of unidentified people in broad daylight in an attempt to murder incident that took place at Sanna Nagara at Honnakatte Junction near Kulai on the outskirts of the city on Monday.

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Kalandar Shakeel, son of Jakriyabba, a resident of Kulai.

The victim, who collapsed was fortunately saved and rushed to Unity Health Complex, where he is being treated. He was on his way home for lunch.

The accused had wicket, iron rod and sticks and one of the accused was wearing a schoolbag, according to some eyewitnesses.

Describing the sequence of events to the reporters, Shakeel said that when he was on his way to home for lunch a gang followed him in a car and bike. They blocked his way and attacked him brandishing iron rod when he was about to reach his home. However, he stopped it with his left hand which was badly hurt.

The CC camera which was installed at Honnakatte Junction has captured the footage of miscreants leaving the spot. However, the footage is not clear, said police sources.

The accused are yet to be arrested.

Retaliation

Shakeel said that he and his employer Jamaluddin at 'Thavakkal Enterprises' in Honnakatte were attacked during a protest rally organised by Hindu organisation condemning the murder of Shivaraj in 2012. Subsequently, an FIR was registered against the accused. He said that there was much pressure on him to withdraw the complaint.

Shakeel had deposed before the court in related to the incident in November 2013.

Mangalore City Police Commissioner R Hithendra said that he would take stringent action against those who responsible for communal tension in Surathkal vicinity.

Mangaluru: The by-election to the legislative council from the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi local authorities' constituency will be a contest among four candidates. An independent candidate, Muhammed Riyaz, has withdrawn his nomination on Monday, the last day for withdrawal.

Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP stated that candidates Kishore BR (BJP), Raju Poojary (Congress), Anwar Sadat S (SDPI), and Dinakar Ullal (independent) will be in the fray. 

Polling will be held at 392 booths in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts between 8am and 4pm on Oct 21.

A total of 6,032 voters from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are eligible to vote. While there will be 234 polling booths in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi will have 158 stations. Gram panchayat members, corporators of the Mangaluru City Corporation, members of city municipal councils, town municipal councils, town panchayats, MLAs, MLCs, and Lok Sabha members are eligible to vote.

Election observer of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Pankaj Kumar Pandey, reviewed the poll preparations at the deputy commissioner's office on Monday. He issued directions to officials regarding arrangements to be made during the election and counting of votes.

The deputy commissioner stated that out of 6,032 voters, 3,127 are women and 2,905 are men. He said the counting of votes will be held at St Aloysius PU College in the city on Oct 24.

Udupi deputy commissioner Vidya Kumari K, city police commissioner Anupam Agrawal, Dakshina Kannada ZP CEO Anandh K, Dakshina Kannada SP Yathish N, Udupi SP Arun K, and additional deputy commissioners Santhosh Kumar G and Mamatha Devi were present.
