Mangaluru, Aug 2: A group of activists from Youth Congress on Wednesday “raided” the office of Income Tax Department in Mangaluru, accusing the department of being a tool to silence the voice against BJP.
The activists vandalized the office premises hours after the unexpected I-T raids on residences, resort and offices of Congress leader and Energy Minister D K Shivakumar who is in charge of protecting Gujarat Congress MLA’s from BJP’s alleged horse-trading bid.
The activists also attempted to set tyres on fire in front of the Central Revenue Buildings, housing the Income Tax office at Attavara in the city. When police prevented them from doing so, they tried to enter the office premises. As the doors were closed, the members broke the glass panes, sources said.
Mangaluru City Corporation Councillor A C Vinayraj, corporator, Mangaluru City Corporation, slammed the BJP for indulging in horse trading to form governments in small States.
Now the party is indulging in a similar practice at Gujarat where Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled, he alleged. When Gujarat Congress MLAs are kept at a safe place in Karnataka, the BJP is misusing I-T Department to its advantage, the Councillor said.
The members were dispersed by the police later. No one has been arrested so far and Income Tax Department officials are yet to file a plaint, the inspector added.
