Mangaluru, Aug 10: A local court has awarded life imprisonment to a youth after convicting him of murdering his lover.
The convict is Laxman Acharya, 31, a resident of Marodi village in Belthangady of Dakshin Kannada district.
The sixth additional district and sessions court judge Sayeedunnisa pronounced the quantum of punishment on Friday.
The incident took place in August 2012. The couple were in an illegitimate relationship. The victim was living with her nine-year-old son and she had forced him to marry her. However, Laxman was against it.
On August 16, the accused strangulated her and fled with her gold ornaments. He was arrested on August 19 after a missing complaint was filed by victim's brother and was taken to the spot where the decomposed body of the victim was found.
The chargesheet was filed by Bhaskar Rai, then inspector of Venur police station.
Public prosecutor Judith OM Crasta said that 23 witnesses and 20 documents were examined by the court.
Judge Sayeedunnisa found the accused guilty under Indian Penal Code section 302. However, he was not found guilty under IPC section 376 (rape). The rape charges have not been proved as they were in relationship.
Laxman has also been told to pay a fine of Rs 2 lakh out of which Rs 1.5 lakh has to be given to victim's son, failing which he will have to undergo additional one year of imprisonment.
