Bantwal, Dec 30: Two persons riding on a bike were killed in a road mishap when their bike was knocked down by a goods carrier at Kuddupadau in Vittal police station limits on Saturday.
The deceased are Mohommad Sharief (28) from Adkasthala in Yenmakaje and Mohommad Zahir (22) from Mugeru.
A case has been registered and in connection to the mishap Uday from Chaurkadu has been arrested. The goods carrier belongs to the owner of Janaki Ram general stores in Adyanadka.
It is said that Uday, the driver of the goods carrier had fled the scene after running over the boys at about 12 mid night. A family in the vicinity saw the headlight of the bike on for a long time and when they came out they saw that two boys were in critical state.
They summoned for an ambulance but by the time the ambulance could arrive they were dead.
Due to the mishap the side mirror of the goods carrier had fallen off. Probably due to this, the driver returned to the mishap area and launched a search for the mirror. When the locals spotted him, he left the place and moved towards Adyanadka. The locals were not aware that the same vehicle had caused the mishap.
At about 12.15 the cops arrived at the spot and found the broken mirror of the vehicle. The mirror had a sticker stuck on it. When the locals spotted it they said that the logo was of Janaki Ram general stores.
Though the goods carrier was traced, the vehicle had reached Cherkadu in Kerala. The cops had to face several problem there due to jurisdictional issues and hence they later informed Badiyadka police station and asked the local cops to arrest the driver and seize the vehicle.
The Circle Inspector is said to have declared that the youth had died after their bike skid on the road and had told the locals to restrain themselves from giving statements in the case.
It is also said that a reporter who arrived at the spot to cover the mishap was treated rudely by the Circle Inspector.
The reporter has lodged a complaint against the circle inspector with the Inspector General of Police (western range).
