Though the pre-monsoon showers had begun in Mangalore and other parts of Dakshina Kannada district a couple of weeks ago, Mangaloreans experienced the real vigour of rainy season for the first time in this year on Wednesday.
The rainfall was marked by occasional lightning and gale snapping power and cable lines and uprooting trees in some areas of the city disrupting vehicular movement.
Five persons were injured when a pendal collapsed on the premises of a temple in Shakti Nagar on Wednesday owing to gusty wind. They were treated at a private hospital.
The high winds also brought down many giant cut-outs and banners in many parts of the city indirectly helping the Mangalore City Corporation's on going clean-up drive.
A stationary motorbike was damaged when a huge banner suddenly fell on it in front of Mangalore Gate building in Kankanady. A tree fell on the road near Mangalore Central Railway Station, affecting traffic for sometime.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of rain or thunderstorm in Mangalore on Thursday and Friday.
