Unorganised sector workers demand free sites

Mangalore, April 20: Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district units of Centre of Indian Trade Unions on Thursday organised protests as a part of the state-wide protest called for by the CITU seeking fulfilment of various demands of workers of the unorganised sector including free sites.

In Mangalore, protest was staged outside Deputy Commissioner's office while in Udupi protesters staged stir in front of service bus stop demanding the guarantee of labour rights and job security to the labourers.

Forwarding the memorandum to Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda through Tahsildar Abhijin, Udupi district unit of CITU General Secretary P Vishwanath Rai said government should take measures to end the contract labour system.

Besides government should take action to bring workers in unorganised sector under the social security net and provide pension benefit to all workers.

Strongly condemning the anti- labour policies pursued by both central and state governments, Rai demanded minimum wages of Rs 10,000 should be offered to the labourers including unskilled labourers.

Social security should be guaranteed according to the welfare schemes announced under Unorganised Sector Workers' Social Security Act 2008, he said.

The other demands include registration of labour unions within 45 days of its inception.

Strict measures to implement labour laws, free sties for the homeless labourers, identity cards to all labourers including unorganised sector labourers through security board, regularization of ASHA workers and also workers appointed under various government schemes like “Aksahara Dasoha” and anganvadi.

Committees should be set up at work areas to avoid sexual harassment on women as per Supreme Court directions. Besides women labourers should be given compulsory 180 days of maternity leave,” Rai said.
