Udupi, July 25: Large number of students on Tuesday staged a dharna in the city under the banner of Campus Front of India in protest against the alleged false cases registered against the students by the Governing Council of Sri Ramakunjeshwara First Grade College.
The Ramakunja based college had lodged complaint against 14 students last week following a massive protest demanding the college authorities to allow the Muslim girls to wear headscarf on the campus. They also lodged complaint against the president of State unit of CFI Mohammed Tufail.
Addressing the protesters Udupi district unit president of CFI Farhan Honnalla accused the Ramakunjeshwara College of resorting to illegal and dishonest way to curb the Muslim students, who were demanding their constitutional rights.
Though All Colleges Students Union had staged a peaceful protest demanding justice for the Muslim students and submitted a memorandum to the principal of the College on July 20 in the presence of police, they went on to the extent of foisting false cases against the innocent students, he lamented.
He said that any educational institution cannot impose ban on headscarf in India since the constitution of this country has guaranteed the citizens their religious rights.
He said that the recent communally motivated move of some educational institutions to ban to headscarf on campus is not only a violation of their fundamental right, but it was tantamount to an assault on the religious belief of students.
Mr Honnalla expressed concern over the future of Muslim students, who have been allegedly being harassed by principal and authorities of Ramakunjeshwara College.
“The College authorities did not allow Muslim students to attend class for over two weeks. The loss of attendance has put a question mark on the future of these students”, he said.
He demanded that the President of India, Governor of Karnataka and Union Human Resources Development Ministry should intervene in this matter and provide justice to the aggrieved students.
