Moodbidri, Jul 30: An outline has been prepared for the construction of a state of the art market on the existing land in Moodbidri town municipal council (TMC) limits at a cost of Rs 26 crore on a public-private partnership.
Addressing a town council meeting here recently, architect of the project Kumarchandra said that the proposed market would comprise of a building complex covering an area of 1.60 square feet, including a ground level, an upper storey and two basements. The new market will be constructed by privately-owned construction company without causing any inconvenience to the traders in the existing market, he said.
He said that eligible private contractors could bid for the project once a tender was called by the town municipal council. The contractor should complete the construction of the new market structure within a period of two years and look after its maintenance for the next 15 years after its completion. Moodbidri TMC will look after its maintenance once the lease of the private contractors expired after 17 years, he informed.
The citizens and town municipal council will not face any inconvenience with regard to the project, since the market will be constructed under the supervision of the council. The TMC should also constitute a committee which will monitor the quality of the construction at each level, he said.
Separate sections for vegetables, fruits and seafood
As per the outline drafted for the new market covering a total area of 1.60 lakh square feet, an area of 10,226 square feet to the south of ground level will comprise of the vegetable section, which will be able to house a total of 88 stalls, while an area of 3,470 square feet on the north side will comprise of the seafood section, which will be able to house close to 72 seafood vending units. The remaining area of 7, 600 square feet will comprise of 65 stalls for other traders.
The two basement sections will be used as parking areas, which will be able to house nearly 200 four-wheeler vehicles and 150 two-wheelers.
The upper storey will comprise of a total area of 28,850 square feet that could be used for further upgradation of the market, said Mr Kumarchandra in the meeting.
