Udupi, Jan 22: In order to provide legal assistance to innocent members of the minority communities arrested by the police on various charges, a legal cell will be set by the Karnataka State Minorities Commission.

Stating that there was a practice among the police to arrest innocent Muslims as a “precautionary measure” whenever there was trouble, Ms Banu said the Commission will ensure that no innocent person is forced to face trouble and difficulties.
She also expressed concern over the increasing instances of arrest of innocent members of minority communities. The Commission is also planning to hold communal harmony meets across the State, particularly in the coastal districts, to remove misunderstandings among different communities.
Ms Banu said that the Commission was also planning to set up a research centre in the name of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, the founder of Aligarh Muslim University.
