Mangaluru, Jun 27: Senior Congress member and Billava community leader Harish Kumar has been appointed the president of the Dakshina Kannada district Congress Committee.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G Parameshwara had reportedly consulted several local leaders before elevating Mr Kumar to the new post.
The appointment is seen as an apparent attempt by the Congress to woo Billavas in the coastal district in the wake of community stalwart and former union minister B Janardhana Poojary’s crusade against chief minister Siddaramaiah.
The post of the DCC chief was vacant in Dakshina Kannada for past three years after District in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai stepped down from the post.
Though senior Congressman Ibrahim Kodichal was made the ad-hoc president, the party was in need of a full-time president with less than one year to go for the crucial state Assembly polls.
Harish Kumar was so far serving as the president of Beltangady rural block Congress, a post handed over to N Srinivas V Kini following the former’s elevation.
The Congress had also fielded Mr Kumar for assembly polls in Belthangady constituency in the past. However, he had lost the polls.
