“I started writing few months back and the book will contain all my good and bad experiences right from my childhood,” said the 80-year-old leader, who is recently being alienated by the Congress for his relentless barb against chief minister Siddaramaiah and other party leaders.

Being the most influential leader of Billava community and one of the most powerful politicians of coastal Karnataka, Mr Poojary had served as Union Minister of State for Finance and Union Minister of State for Rural Development between 1982 to 1989 during the tenure of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

He was first elected to the 6th Lok Sabha in 1977 from the erstwhile Mangaluru (now Dakshina Kannada) constituency. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980, 1984 and 1989 from the same constituency.

In 1994, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament – a position he held until 2008. He also served as the General Secretary of All India Congress Committee and President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee.

Prior to joining politics, Mr Poojary practiced law as a barrister from 1960 to 1979. As a lawyer, he was actively engaged in safeguarding the interests of poor agricultural tenants and defended a large number of poor people by giving them free legal aid.

He was responsible for the construction of several college, schools and temples, including the Gokarnanatheshwara Temple (Kudroli Temple) in Mangaluru. He is the architect of world famous Mangaluru Dasara. He also took active part in construction of Dharmasthala Kanyadi Shree Raam Mandir. He also took initiative in the renovation of Kankanady Shree Brahma Baiderkala Garodi Temple and Katpady Shree Vishwanatha Temple.

Udupi, May 15: A routine surgery turned tragic at a private hospital in Udupi’s Karkala on Wednesday evening when a 54-year-old woman died during a procedure to remove a suspected abdominal lump.

The incident triggered immediate outrage from the deceased’s family, leading to a protest outside the hospital premises.

The deceased has been identified as Zubaida, a resident of Sanur, who had been living in a rented house near the hospital. She was admitted after complaining of severe abdominal pain, and doctors advised surgical intervention to remove a lump believed to be the cause of her discomfort.

However, Zubaida reportedly passed away mid-surgery, sparking anger and grief among her relatives and local residents. A crowd soon gathered outside the hospital, demanding an explanation from the medical staff and questioning the circumstances surrounding her death.

As tensions rose, police personnel from the Karkala Town Station were called in to pacify the situation and prevent further escalation. Authorities managed to restore calm and are reportedly investigating the incident.

Mangaluru, May 10: A new chapter in Mangaluru’s infrastructure story unfolds on May 16, as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah arrives to inaugurate two transformative projects: the newly built Deputy Commissioner’s Office at Padil and a world-class indoor stadium at Urwa.

These developments signal a strong push toward better governance and enhanced urban amenities in the coastal city.

₹75 Crore DC Office

The new DC Office, spread across a modern campus at Padil, comes with a price tag of ₹75 crore. Initially budgeted at ₹55 crore, the project received an additional ₹20 crore under the Smart City Mission, aimed at integrating technology and convenience in public administration.

“This facility reflects our vision of a centralized, people-friendly government. With 23 departments under one roof, citizens can now access services more efficiently,” said District In-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.

The phased relocation of departments will begin on the day of inauguration and be completed over the next 2 to 3 weeks.

₹35 Crore Indoor Stadium Opens Doors

Also on the agenda is the grand opening of Mangaluru’s new indoor sports complex in Urwa, built for ₹35 crore. This ultra-modern facility is equipped to host national-level indoor events and will offer quality training infrastructure for emerging sports talent in the region.

Initiated during Siddaramaiah’s previous term, both the stadium and DC Office projects are now ready for public use and are expected to create lasting impact.

“These projects are not just buildings. They are investments in governance, youth, and the future of Mangaluru,” said Rao.
