Mangaluru, May 2: The communally sensitive Ullal region on the outskirts of the city remained more or less peaceful in last two days after attempts by a few mischief mongers on Saturday to foment trouble were thwarted by the family members of Safwan, who died of injuries earlier.

When Safwan's body was to be taken out of the mortuary of a hospital on Saturday afternoon, activists of an organisation gathered at the spot and demanded that the body not be removed. The activists allegedly sought the appearance of the Deputy Commissioner and payment of compensation immediately to the members of the family.
However, displaying an acceptable gesture, the family members of Safwan rebutted the activists and said that they know when and how to collect the compensation. They reportedly said that the activists were attempting to create trouble in an already tense situation and turned them out. It is said that Safwan and members of his family were making a living through daily work.
Meanwhile, the areas under Ullal police limits remained incident-free till Sunday night. Commissioner of Police M. Chandra Sekhar said that the situation was peaceful and attempts were on to identify the assailants involved in Friday's attack.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (South) R.R. Kalyana Shetty said that the forces deployed in the region would continue to be there till the situation becomes normal. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure would remain in force for a couple of days.
