Bhatkal, Dec 31: Five members of an alleged gold smuggling mafia from Bhatkal town in Uttara Kannada district have been booked by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Goa.

The intelligence officers of the Air Intelligence Unit of Customs along with Intelligence wing of the Central Industrial Security Force, Dabolim Airport, Goa, seized 19.49 kg of gold worth Rs.5 crore from Manotgi, who was working as ground staff of Air India, on July 7.
This gold was handed over to him by three Bhatkal residents at the airport.
Manotgi had confessed, said Customs sources, that he was entrusted with the task of collecting the gold by Sheikh Javid.
Javid, the ED feels is the master mind behind the smuggling of gold at the Goa Airport and had attempted to do it earlier too.
ED sources also revealed on Tuesday that there was substantial material relating to the offence of money laundering against these accused persons.
œOur preliminary investigation in this case has established that Javid is involved in other incidents involving gold seizure over a last few months.
Also his financial holdings have risen phenomenally in last five years. So now the focus will be on Javid and associates, said a senior ED official seeking anonymity.
