Mangalore, April 29: Putting up a scintillating all-round show, Team Mangalore beat Former Zimbabwe captain Heath Streak's men by 38 runs in a T20 encounter at NMPT Ground, Panambur, on Sunday.

Batting first the Mangalore team named as Western Institute Karnataka Indians scored a mammoth 193 runs in their allotted 20 overs.

Opener Naushad starred for Karnataka Indians blasting 72 off 49 deliveries while Gurudeep also contributed with a half century scoring 50 off 37 balls.

The Karnataka Indians lost 6 wickets during the course of their innings. For Property Infratech Zimbabwe Africans, Pomie Mbangwa picked up two wickets giving away 27 runs while Elton Chigumbura, Raymond Price and Douglas Marillier picked up a wicket apiece.

In reply, the Zimbabwe Africans had a tough time negotiating the pace of Sampath Kumar who picked up 3 wickets in his first spell, including 2 in one over to put the African team on the backfoot straightaway.

Sampath Kumar accounted for former captain of Zimbabwe Alistair Campbell (1) who opened with the current national team captain Brendon Taylor (3) and Charles Coventry (2) who held the record for the highest individual ODI score of 194 alongside Saeed Anwar of Pakistan for a long time until it was eclipsed by Sachin Tendulkar's double ton at Nagpur.

Grant Flower, another veteran of the Zimbabwe side showed his class with a few shots on either side of the wicket but his stay on the crease was brief too and he departed for 18 after being bowled by Karnataka Indians skipper Jayaprakash.

With almost half his side back in the hut, skipper Heath Streak stepped out to bat and with Douglas Marillier, put on 87 runs for the sixth wicket. While Streak hit some real big ones out of the park, Marillier played some of his trademark cheeky shots and reverse sweeps. However, the asking rate was too much for the Streak and Marillier to handle and they both departed ultimately scoring 59 and 28 respectively. Streak's half century comprised of four sixes and five fours while Marillier smashed four hits across the fence.

It was then a question of completing the formalities and Sampath Kumar returned to bowl the last over disturbing the timber of Terry Duffins and Dirk Viljoen off the last two bowls to snatch a five wicket haul. At the end of the innings, his figures read 5/22. Spinner Sumeeth scalped two wickets while Vinay GK and captain Jayaprakash picked up a wicket each. The Zimbabwe Africans could only manage 155, handing over a 38 run victory to the local team.

Naushad took home the 'Man of the Match' award for his splendid batting performance in addition to the 'Highest Score Award' as well.

Zimbabwe Africans skipper Heath Streak was awarded the 'Highest Sixes Award'. His teammate Douglas Marillier was awarded the 'Outstanding Spectacular Cricketer' award.

Gurudeep of Karnataka Indians won the 'Best Batsman' award while Elton Chigumbura and Sampath Kumar won the 'Best Fielder' and 'Best Bowler' awards respectively.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district has secured the top position in Karnataka in the SSLC (Class 10) results for the academic year 2024–25, with a pass percentage of 91.12%, as announced on Friday.

In the previous academic year (2023–24), the district had ranked second in the state with a higher pass percentage of 92.12%. Despite a 1% drop in the pass rate this year, the district has risen to the top position. In 2022–23, it had ranked 17th with 89.52%.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) Venkatesh S Patagar attributed the district’s improved rank to several focused initiatives. Among them were the timely completion of the syllabus by December 2024 and subject-wise special classes.

Special attention was given to slow learners through dedicated support classes. The department also organized fortnightly parent meetings to track students' academic progress.

To instill discipline and a consistent study routine, schools made regular wake-up calls to students in the mornings and evenings. Other initiatives included model question paper practice, the 'Jnana Sinchana' live YouTube series, online doubt-clearing sessions, and interactive radio phone-in programs.

Students were also encouraged to attempt the 'Vijayeebhava' question paper series, developed and published by the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Udupi.

Udupi, May 12: A tragic incident unfolded at a wedding in Nandikur, Udupi district, when a four-year-old boy, Vasudeva, drowned in a temple pond near the venue.

According to a police complaint filed by Satyanarayana, 38, a resident of Kurkalu village in Kaup, the child had accompanied his mother, Soumya, and siblings—Vaishnavi (10) and Vishnu Priya (1)—to attend a wedding at the Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple Hall in Nandikur.

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Soumya was feeding her infant daughter inside the hall while Vasudeva remained nearby. After tending to the baby, she stepped away briefly to wash her hands, during which time she noticed that Vasudeva was missing.

A frantic search ensued involving family members and others at the venue. About 15 minutes later, at around 2:15 p.m., Vasudeva was found unresponsive in the temple pond adjacent to the hall. Bystanders pulled him from the water and attempted resuscitation.

He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Udupi, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Despite this, the family sought further medical assistance at a hospital in Manipal, but physicians there also confirmed that he had passed away.

The Padubidri police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.

A new chapter is unfolding for football in Mangaluru as the football ground adjacent to Nehru Maidan receives a modern artificial turf, with completion expected by the end of May. This long-awaited upgrade promises to significantly enhance the playing experience for both budding and seasoned footballers in the region.

The project, spearheaded by Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), involves laying synthetic turf across the 90,000 sq ft ground at a cost of ₹2.5 crore. Equipped with efficient drainage systems, the revamped ground will support uninterrupted play throughout the year, regardless of weather conditions.

“This is a long-pending demand of the football community here,” said D.M. Aslam of the Dakshina Kannada District Football Association. “We expect the turf work to be completed in the next two weeks. Currently, around 150 children practice regularly at the ground, and we anticipate that number to rise once the new surface is open.”

MSCL General Manager (Technical), Arun Prabha K.S., noted that while the project had been planned for some time, groundwork officially began after last year’s monsoon league concluded in August. “Once completed, this facility will be a full-fledged synthetic turf suitable for training, local tournaments, and league matches,” he said.

With the inauguration expected soon after the final touches are completed, the new astro turf is set to elevate the city’s football infrastructure and serve as a springboard for talent development across the district.
