Sandhya D'Souza bags prestigious 'Sarojini Naidu National Award-2012'

Mangalore, September 16: Mangalore based young journalist Sandhya C D'Souza has been chosen for prestigious 'Sarojini Naidu National Award-2012' for her special report on women empowerment.

The prize-winning article, Laila ladies ensure 'safety', had appeared in the English Daily Deccan Herald on June 1 2012.

The award, instituted by the Hunger Project, a global strategic organisation, includes a citation and Rs 2 lakhs. She will receive the award in New Delhi on October 1.

Her article deals with how a small group of ladies in Laila village of Dakshina Kannada district is striving to ensure every rural woman maintains menstrual hygiene. Headed by Laila Gram Panchayat Member Yashodha, Isiri-Self Help Group that started functioning in August 2011 prepares biodegradable sanitary napkins from wood pulp and manufactures hygienic and low-cost sanitary napkins for women.

An alumnus of St Aloysius College, Mangalore, 24 year old Sandhya had joined Mangalore Bureau of 'Deccan Herald' in 2010 as a reporter cum sub-editor.

It could be recalled here that Deccan Herald Bureau Chief Ronald Anil Fernandes and Senior Correspondent of Hosa Digantha Kannada Daily Guruvappa Balepuni had bagged the same award in 2009 and 2011 respectively.
