Mangalore, December 25: Rome of the East, as this port city is referred to, celebrated Christmas by exchanging of gifts, chocolates, cakes and carol-singing on Tuesday.
Devout Christians started their celebrations with the morning mass, sang carols and exchanged greetings and gifts. Churches in the city came alive with festive frolic.
Shops, restaurants, houses, hotels, streets, all are decked out for the occasion with streamers, clay lamps, glowing stars and lightings.
Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D' Souza led the Christian community in prayers by concelebrating the grand mass at Rosario Cathedral and welcomed visitors at his residence at Kodialbail. Children greeted Rev. Aloysius Paul D' Souza.
Churches in the city were a sight to behold complete with illuminations, Christmas tree, star-lights, and other knick-knacks.
The decorative cribs in churches and houses lent an extra grace to the festivities. Christians distributed “kuswar” to their friends and neighbours and invited their near and dear to their homes for the celebration.
Children were enjoying being bestowed with gifts and sweets by Santa Clauses at various prominent places.
