Addressing media persons at his office in Mangalore on Friday, Manish Kharbikar, Mangalore Police Commissioner, said that the underworld criminal who was in Dubai, has been nabbed with the help of the Interpol.
Shetty is an accused in serious crimes such as murder, dacoity, transportation of arms and the like in Mangalore as well as Bangalore.
Prominent among them is the Vamanjoor Rohi murder case. He faces charges of attempting to gun down Richard Pinto, partner in Balmatta's Souza Electronics, Bangalore's Chemmannur jewellery dacoity case, and transportation of arms from Vittal police station limits as well.
After the Chemmannur Jewellers' dacoity case in Bangalore in 2007, Shetty had gone absconding and escaped the clutches of police.
Mangalore police gathered information that he had fled to Dubai using a pseudo name Nishit Prakash Arasa. He had managed to create fake certificates and address proofs and obtain a fake passport from the Bangalore Passport office.
Mangalore police then accumulated information about his sponsor in Dubai, his address and mobile number. On July 5, 2012, a Red Corner Notice was issued against him via Interpol and the information obtained about him was shared with Dubai Interpol police.
On the basis of this information, Dubai Interpol police apprehended him on February 18, earlier this year and followed it up with the extradition process. After four months of procedure, on June 13, he was deported from Dubai and brought to Delhi. Mangalore Police took custody of Shetty in Delhi on the same day and brought to him to Mangalore.
More information about underworld activities is yet to be derived from him.
He has to be produced before the court and on interrogation greater insights into the underworld activity will be obtained, Mr. Kharbikar said.
