Bangalore, Sep 3: A 32-year-old film actor-turned-realtor Anil Kumar was killed after the imported BMW bike he was riding hit a tree on 17th Cross, Malleswaram, past Tuesday midnight. Incidentally , the victim's father was following right behind in a car but could not keep pace with Anil who was driving at high speed.

By the time realtor Balaram caught up with his son, death had snatched Anil away. The impact of the collision was such that the helmet worn by the victim broke into three pieces.

Anil, a resident of BEL Layout, near Vidyaranyapura, who essayed the second lead in the 2007 Kannada film Shivani , is said to have touched a speed of 100 km per hour on the stretch linking Margosa Road and 8th Main Road. He lost control over the Rs 28-lakh bike and hit a tree.

Breaking down, father Balaram recounted the run-up to the tragedy . "I had been to KR Puram for a meeting. I had to pay money to somebody and there was some shortage. I asked someone to send me some money through our driver. But it could not be organized. So Anil volunteered to get the money to me," Balaram said.

The father and son duo headed home in their respective vehicles: Anil on his BMW bike and Balaram in his car.

"My driver couldn't keep pace with him. He was way ahead of us. I reached the spot minutes after the accident had occurred. By then some members of the public had put him into an autorickshaw and rushed towards the hospital," Balaram lamented. Anil was taken to the nearby Columbia Asia Hospital. But he succumbed to injuries in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Helmet broke into 3 pieces

"From eyewitness accounts and evidence we have, overspeeding is the cause of death," said police officers. Police said the helmet worn by Anil broke into three pieces.

"The company that provided him the BMW bike itself had provided the helmet," sources added.

Anil dabbled in films

Anil had essayed the second hero's role in Shivani, a Kannada film released in 2007. The film was produced by NL Giridhar, elder brother of former legislator NL Narendra Babu. Anil was known by his screen name, Suraj. The film had sunk at the box office though. Anil then dabbled as an actor in TV serials but did not stay in the profession for long. He had recently joined his father Balaram's real estate business. Anil had married Kannika only a year ago. The couple had no children.

Udupi, May 12: A tragic incident unfolded at a wedding in Nandikur, Udupi district, when a four-year-old boy, Vasudeva, drowned in a temple pond near the venue.

According to a police complaint filed by Satyanarayana, 38, a resident of Kurkalu village in Kaup, the child had accompanied his mother, Soumya, and siblings—Vaishnavi (10) and Vishnu Priya (1)—to attend a wedding at the Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple Hall in Nandikur.

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Soumya was feeding her infant daughter inside the hall while Vasudeva remained nearby. After tending to the baby, she stepped away briefly to wash her hands, during which time she noticed that Vasudeva was missing.

A frantic search ensued involving family members and others at the venue. About 15 minutes later, at around 2:15 p.m., Vasudeva was found unresponsive in the temple pond adjacent to the hall. Bystanders pulled him from the water and attempted resuscitation.

He was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Udupi, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Despite this, the family sought further medical assistance at a hospital in Manipal, but physicians there also confirmed that he had passed away.

The Padubidri police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district has secured the top position in Karnataka in the SSLC (Class 10) results for the academic year 2024–25, with a pass percentage of 91.12%, as announced on Friday.

In the previous academic year (2023–24), the district had ranked second in the state with a higher pass percentage of 92.12%. Despite a 1% drop in the pass rate this year, the district has risen to the top position. In 2022–23, it had ranked 17th with 89.52%.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) Venkatesh S Patagar attributed the district’s improved rank to several focused initiatives. Among them were the timely completion of the syllabus by December 2024 and subject-wise special classes.

Special attention was given to slow learners through dedicated support classes. The department also organized fortnightly parent meetings to track students' academic progress.

To instill discipline and a consistent study routine, schools made regular wake-up calls to students in the mornings and evenings. Other initiatives included model question paper practice, the 'Jnana Sinchana' live YouTube series, online doubt-clearing sessions, and interactive radio phone-in programs.

Students were also encouraged to attempt the 'Vijayeebhava' question paper series, developed and published by the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Udupi.
