Mangalore, Oct 17: Extending the support to Dr Veerendra Heggade, in the case of rape and murder of 17-year-old Saujanya in Ujire a year ago, veteran congress leader Janardhana Poojary said that government should take stringent action against those who spread baseless allegations against Dr Heggade and his family members.
Addressing the media persons on Thursday at Mangalore Press Club here Mr Poojary said he said police had arrested one Santhosh Rao in this connection and are doing proper investigation into the matter. If people believe he is not real culprit, they should show the real culprits with proper evidence.
“Section 201 of Indian Penal Code says causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender is also punishable” he said.
“During the incident, I had met the family to hand over Rs 1 lakh on humanitarian grounds. I had also asked them if they suspect anybody's involvement. However, they were clueless then. But now all of sudden, after a year, they suspect three persons who are closely related with Mr Heggade.
Mr Poojary also insisted government should give compensation of Rs 5 lakh to Saujanya's family.
