Mangalore, May 9: The Bunt community is the reason for keeping the social harmony intact in the district of Dakshina Kannada. It is from this community that the minority communities find support for themselves, said DK district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai, speaking at the centenary programme of Bunts Sangha, Mangalore here on Friday.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, he said that although members of the Bunt community enjoyed a high ranking status in the society, it was not earned but provided to them. There were also those from the same community who do not enjoy the same social and economic status. The entire community should be taken forward by uplifting fellow community members belonging to the lower strata of the society, he said, adding that the community should help in strengthening the society in a responsible manner.
He said that the community should be recognised not only because of the economic status of the community members, but because of their behaviour and conduct.
Speaking on the occasion, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that the Bunt community had several laurels and achievements to its credit. Despite the land reforms which took away most of the ancestral land belonging to the Bunts, the community rose again by educating themselves and flourished, he said.
Bunts Sangha president Maladi Ajith Kumar Rai presided over the programme.
Eminent Bunt personalities such as Vinay Hegde, A J Shetty, C A Shankar Shetty, Dr K R Shetty, MLA Shakuntala Shetty and several others were present on the occasion.
Prior to the programme, the newly-constructed circle at Bunts Hostel Circle was inaugurated and handed over for public use by district in-charge B Ramanath Rai, in the presence of Mayor of Mangalore Mahabala Marla, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim.
