Mysuru, Jun 18: Kannada Novelist S L Bhyrappa received the fourth highest civilian Padma Shri award at his residence here on Friday. The Centre had conferred the award on the writer for his contribution to literature and education.
Additional chief secretary Subhash Chandra visited the residence of Bhyrappa around 4.30pm and presented the award in the presence of his friends and family members, including his wife Saraswathi. Chandra presented a Mysore Peta and a shawl to Bhyrappa before presenting the award containing medal and certificate.
Bhyrappa said he is happy that his literary works and the writing style were being recognized by people.
"I believe that the literary works should live even after the death of a writer. I believe awards are worldly. The real award a writer gets is only when the literature he had penned is discussed and shared by people for centuries. For achieving this, the content should be strong,” he said.
“I am not against awards, but I don't bother about them. My efforts and concern will always be in writing good literature. The works of Kumaravyasa and Pampa are read by people today even after centuries," he added.
The 85-year-old said there are lots of ideas in his mind, but they are not concrete yet. "I love to travel regularly to explore new places and to get new thoughts for the literature. Staying in one place will make mind lethargic. It will be like a frog in the well," he said.
About the developments works taken by government atop Chamundi Hill, Bhyrappa said he doesn't understand why the government is adamant on a project that is opposed by people.
Tahasildhar Naveen Joseph, SP Abhinav Khare, DCP HT Shekar, Kannada and Culture assistant director Nirmala Matapathi were among those present.
