Udupi, Feb 11: Bannanje Raja, a notorious underworld fugitive, who hails from coastal Karnataka’s Udupi district reportedly been arrested at Casablanca in North African country of Morocco.

Reports stated that Raja had tried to extort Rs 5 crore from an hotelier in India, who instead informed the police about the same. Soon the Intelligence wing, which plunged into action, passed on the message to the RAW, who nabbed Raja from Morocco.
Raja, the son of Sundar Shettigar and Vilasini from Bannanje village in Udupi holds a bachelor of arts degree. He started his rowdy career during his college days.
After a few years of criminal activities in Udupi, he settled in Bengaluru, where he continued rowdysim. In 1997, Seena, a driver with Sridhar alias Agni Sridhar was killed in a mistaken identity shooting. Raja called up every media organisation in Bangalore and claimed responsibility for the attack. He did the same when unknown persons opened fire at a travel agency in Majestic area as well as any underworld activity where firearms were used.
Bannanje Raja and Ravi Poojari were two elusive underworld dons, who extorted crores of rupees from businessmen by making threatening calls. Their goons would become active after the threatening calls. Both worked separately and no one was sure where they lived.
The duo were concealing their identity when they made the calls. One day, it would appear the call had come from Dubai, and next day from Australia. In between, another call would come from South Africa. The police believe they were making calls through either Voice over Internet Protocol or caller cards. Dozens of cases are pending against him in various places including Mangaluru, Udupi, Bengaluru.
