Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi in Muscat to discuss new arrangements for the management of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
Qalibaf arrived in the Omani capital on Monday evening after talks in Switzerland and a brief stop in Tehran. He is leading an Iranian delegation for consultations with Omani officials on issues related to the strait. Araghchi accompanied him on the visit.
According to a statement issued by Oman’s Foreign Ministry, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations and explored ways to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Badr al-Busaidi said his discussions with Qalibaf and Araghchi included the provisions of the memorandum of understanding recently signed between Tehran and Washington, with particular focus on matters concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
“Our emphasis was on upholding international law and ensuring the safe passage of ships,” the Omani foreign minister said.
The officials also exchanged views on the latest regional developments and stressed the importance of utilizing the current diplomatic opportunity to advance peace efforts and promote stability in the region.
Both sides emphasized that greater cooperation would help reduce tensions, strengthen regional security, and ensure maritime safety in the Strait of Hormuz and other international waterways.
The meeting was attended by Omani Ambassador-at-Large Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al-Hinai, Iran’s Ambassador to Oman Mousa Farhang, and other officials from both countries.
The visit comes amid heightened concerns over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global energy supplies, as Iran seeks to coordinate new management mechanisms with its Gulf neighbour.
Iran and the United States recently signed a memorandum of understanding, with Pakistan reportedly playing a key mediating role. The agreement, which ended the conflict triggered by US-Israeli strikes on February 28, also includes provisions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the gradual lifting of sanctions, subject to further negotiations.
