The Karnataka government is preparing an ambitious Coastal-Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy 2026 aimed at unlocking the tourism potential of the state’s coastline and Malnad region through major investments in cruise, beach and adventure tourism.

The proposed policy will cover six coastal and Malnad districts and focus on strengthening tourism infrastructure while promoting sustainable, community-based tourism that creates new livelihood opportunities.

Tourism Minister K J George, who chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials on Thursday, said the state must adopt a long-term strategy to position Karnataka among India’s premier tourism destinations.

A key priority under the policy is expanding cruise tourism. George directed officials to develop a comprehensive plan to attract more international cruise liners to Mangaluru and other ports. He also stressed the need to create curated tourism circuits and visitor experiences that encourage cruise passengers to spend more time exploring Karnataka.

Officials have been asked to engage with leading cruise operators to understand industry requirements and incorporate their recommendations into the new tourism policy.

The government also plans to give a significant boost to beach tourism by developing more Blue Flag-standard beaches, improving cleanliness and safety measures, upgrading tourism infrastructure, and promoting water sports and adventure activities to offer visitors a world-class coastal experience.

Adventure tourism and theme-based travel circuits across the scenic Western Ghats and coastal belt will also form an integral part of the policy, alongside initiatives designed to involve local communities and promote sustainable tourism.

George further instructed officials to improve facilities at destinations managed by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation and Jungle Lodges & Resorts. The proposed upgrades include better accommodation, sanitation, visitor information systems and other essential amenities to enhance the overall tourist experience.

“Tourism is not merely about developing destinations; it is about creating a world-class experience for every visitor. By strengthening infrastructure, improving connectivity, ensuring safety and delivering quality services, Karnataka can further enhance its position on the global tourism map,” the minister said.
