Mangaluru, July 11: Panakkad Sayyid Nasir Abdul Hayy Shihabuddin Thangal Ba’Alawi has been appointed as the new Qadhi of Dakshina Kannada, filling the vacancy created by the demise of Alhaj Twaqa Ahmed Musliyar.
The appointment was officially announced on Saturday by Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, President of the Administrative Committee of the Zeenath Baksh Central Juma Masjid and Eidgah Masjid, Mangaluru.
Panakkad Sayyid Nasir Abdul Hayy Shihabuddin Thangal, a distinguished Islamic scholar from Kerala, had agreed a few days ago to assume the responsibilities of Dakshina Kannada Qadhi. Following his acceptance, the appointment was formally announced at a meeting of representatives of several mosques convened under the leadership of the Administrative Committee of Zeenath Baksh Central Juma Masjid on Saturday.
Among those present on the occasion were K. Ashraf, Vice-President of the Eidgah and Central Juma Masjid; Muhammad Hanif Haji, General Secretary; S.M. Rasheed Haji, Treasurer; committee members Samad Haji, Addu Haji and Ashraf Halemane; Dakshina Kannada District Madrasa Management President Moydinabba Haji; Yenepoya Javid; and several other prominent personalities.
About New Qadhi
Panakkad Sayyid Nasir Abdul Hayy Shihabuddin Thangal Ba-Alawi was born on May 2, 1966, at Poovad, near Panakkad in Kerala’s Malappuram district.
He began his education at an Othupalli (traditional Qur’anic school) and pursued Islamic studies for 13 years through the Pallidars system. A scholar of profound learning, Panakkad Sayyid Nasir Abdul Hayy Shihabuddin Thangal belongs to the Yemeni Sayyid lineage tracing back to the family of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
After receiving his Sanad (traditional scholarly certification), he served as a Khatib and Mudarris (Islamic teacher) at several mosques and Islamic institutions. Following the demise of his father, he assumed the responsibilities of Qadhi of the Andaman Islands.
In 2009, he was appointed as the Grand Qadhi of Kozhikode (Calicut). He currently serves as the Qadhi for more than 300 mahallas across the districts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad and Thrissur.
He is also the Principal of Imam Ghazali Academy and Rashidiya Arabic College, Wayanad, and serves as the patron of the Sign Institute of Social Leadership, Wayanad.
In addition, he is the President of the Malappuram District Maslahath Committee of the Sunni Mahall Federation, a member of the Kerala State Committee of the Sunni Yuvajana Sangham, and Vice-President of the Tirurangadi Taluk Committee of Samastha Kerala Jam’iyyathul Ulama.
