Ahmedabad: The Adani Group has announced ambitious plans to become a major player in India’s nuclear energy sector, targeting up to 10 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2035.

Speaking at the group’s annual general meeting on Wednesday, chairman Gautam Adani said the conglomerate’s entry into nuclear energy through Adani Atomic Energy marks a significant step towards strengthening India’s long-term energy security.

India is seeking to rapidly expand its nuclear power generation as part of its clean energy transition. The country aims to increase nuclear capacity from the current 8 GW to 100 GW by 2047 after opening the sector to private domestic and foreign investment last year.

If Adani achieves its target, it could emerge as the country’s largest private-sector nuclear power operator. Currently, state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) is the sole operator of nuclear plants and aims to reach 50 GW capacity, while NTPC has announced plans for 30 GW.

Several major private firms, including Tata Power and Reliance Industries, are also exploring opportunities in the sector.

The Adani Group said it has already identified land for future nuclear projects but did not disclose specific locations.

Apart from nuclear energy, the conglomerate said its data centre business remains on track to develop 3 GW of capacity by 2030. It is also expanding its piped natural gas network to meet growing domestic demand.

Meanwhile, Adani Enterprises shares gained 2.3 per cent on Wednesday following the announcements.
