State-owned oil marketing companies in India have sharply increased the price of 19-kg commercial Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders by ₹993, with the revised rates coming into effect from Friday, May 1. In Delhi, the price of a 19-kg cylinder has risen to ₹3,071.50.
However, the price of 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinders remains unchanged, offering relief to households despite ongoing volatility in global fuel markets. LPG prices are typically reviewed and revised at the beginning of every month.
This marks the third hike in commercial LPG rates in recent months. Prices were earlier increased by ₹144 in March and by nearly ₹200 on April 1. The latest surge is expected to significantly impact restaurants, eateries, and other businesses that depend heavily on LPG for daily operations.
The price increase comes against the backdrop of continued geopolitical tensions in West Asia, particularly the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran since February 28. Now in its eighth week, the standoff has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial global energy route—leading to fluctuations in oil supply and prices.
Bulk diesel and jet fuel prices also raised
Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. has also announced hikes in bulk diesel and aviation turbine fuel (ATF), used in international airline operations. While the revised rates were not disclosed, the company stated that the changes apply to select industrial segments, which form a relatively small portion of overall fuel consumption and are subject to routine monthly revisions based on international prices.
According to Indian Oil, bulk and commercial LPG account for about 1% of India’s total LPG consumption, which stands at approximately 33 million tonnes annually.
On retail fuel prices, the company clarified that petrol, diesel, and domestic LPG cylinder rates remain unchanged, shielding consumers from the recent surge in global fuel prices.
