Udupi, Aug 20: In a crackdown aimed at curbing the use of potentially harmful substances in fruit ripening, officials from the Food and Health departments conducted raids on several banana storage centres at Alevoor in Udupi district following complaints of chemicals being used to artificially ripen bananas.
The inspection was carried out under the supervision of Kundapur Assistant Commissioner Rashmi, with officials from the Health and Food departments taking part in the operation.
During the raids, officials reportedly found evidence suggesting the use of chemicals to speed up the ripening process. Artificial colouring substances allegedly used to alter the appearance of the bananas were also seized.
The use of unsafe chemicals for artificially ripening fruits has been a recurring food safety concern, as consumers may be unable to distinguish naturally ripened produce from fruits that have been chemically treated.
Cases have been registered against those allegedly involved in the practice, while vehicles suspected of being used to transport or facilitate the activity have also been seized.
The raids serve as a reminder for consumers to remain alert about the quality and appearance of fruits they purchase, particularly when fruits appear to have been ripened or coloured unnaturally.
Officials are yet to disclose the quantity and nature of the chemicals and other materials seized during the operation. Further details are awaited.
