Kuwait City: An Indian national was killed and more than 60 people were injured after Kuwait International Airport came under attack amid the escalating military confrontation between Iran and the United States, the Indian Embassy in Kuwait confirmed on Wednesday.
The incident occurred as tensions in the Gulf region intensified following recent US military operations targeting Iranian positions. In response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes against several regional targets, including sites in Kuwait and Bahrain.
According to Kuwait’s Health Ministry, at least 63 people were injured, including airport staff and passengers. Kuwaiti authorities reported damage to airport infrastructure and nearby diplomatic facilities during the attack. One person was killed, while several others sustained injuries. Flight operations at Kuwait International Airport were temporarily suspended following the incident.
The civil aviation authority later announced the resumption of Kuwait Airways operations from Terminal 4 after safety assessments and necessary precautions were completed.
The latest escalation has further undermined a fragile ceasefire reached earlier this year. Global oil prices rose by more than 2 percent amid growing concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route that previously handled nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
In neighbouring Bahrain, the military said it intercepted three missiles and several drones. Iran had earlier stated that it targeted military installations linked to US forces in the Gulf, including the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain.
The US military said some missiles launched towards Kuwait failed to reach their targets or broke apart during flight. It also reported intercepting drones allegedly aimed at civilian vessels and American military assets in the region.
Meanwhile, the United States confirmed carrying out strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island near the Strait of Hormuz, describing the operation as a response to attempted attacks on US interests. Iranian media, however, reported that Iranian forces had acted in retaliation to what Tehran described as US attacks on Iranian assets in the Gulf.
Senior Iranian official Mohsen Rezaei warned that Tehran would respond forcefully to any further military action, while UAE diplomatic adviser Anwar Gargash condemned attacks affecting Kuwait and Bahrain and called for regional unity to prevent further escalation.
Amid the growing conflict, uncertainty continues to surround diplomatic efforts. Iranian media reported that direct contacts between Tehran and Washington had stalled in recent days, although US President Donald Trump maintained that negotiations were continuing.
The latest developments have heightened concerns across the Gulf region, where governments remain on alert amid fears of a wider conflict that could threaten regional security, aviation and global energy supplies.
