For the first time in nearly five decades, India no longer has a Left-led government. With the defeat of the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front in Kerala in the 2026 Assembly elections, the last remaining Communist government in the country has fallen.
The LDF, led by Pinarayi Vijayan, had been in power since 2016 and was the final stronghold of Left politics in India. Its loss paves the way for the Congress-led United Democratic Front to return to power in the state.
This marks the first time since 1977 that India will have no Communist chief minister. The Left once dominated West Bengal, governing from 1977 to 2011 — a record 34-year rule that ended with the rise of Mamata Banerjee and her party. Similarly, the Left ruled Tripura from 1993 until 2018, when it was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The decline of Left politics has been gradual but consistent, accelerating after the 2009 general elections, and culminating now in the absence of any Left-led government in the country.
