Udupi: An FIR has been registered against Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna at for allegedly making inflammatory statements during a protest against the Congress and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) here on Tuesday.

According to Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, the police found the MLA’s statements to be inflammatory and categorised them as hate speech.

Based on a complaint, the Udupi Town police registered an FIR under Sections 57, 192, 196(2), 352, 353(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Shankar said further legal proceedings would be initiated in the case. The complaint was filed by Ashok Kodavoor, district Congress president.

During the protest, Suvarna said: “Rahul Gandhi’s dynasty would be demolished like the Babri Masjid.” He also allegedly made derogatory remarks against the Congress leader, triggering widespread criticism.

Congress leaders visited the Udupi Town Police Station around midnight and submitted a complaint to police inspector Mahesh Prasad.
