Mangaluru: Food safety officials have temporarily sealed the storage room at a Blinkit facility in Mangaluru after a consumer allegedly found worms inside eggs purchased through the quick-commerce platform.

The complaint was reportedly brought to the attention of Karnataka Health Minister U T Khader, following which officials from the Food Safety Department inspected the Blinkit facility at Falnir Square in Falnir.

During the inspection, officials found packets containing broken eggs and directed the facility staff to immediately remove and dispose of the affected stock, according to an official release.

As a precautionary measure, officials temporarily sealed the storage room to facilitate thorough cleaning and sanitisation of the food storage area. The action was limited to the storage room and did not involve sealing the entire Blinkit facility.

The Food Safety Department is expected to issue a notice to the establishment seeking an explanation over the incident. Further action will be decided based on the inspection findings and the response submitted by the facility management.

The action comes amid increased scrutiny of food safety and hygiene standards across Karnataka.

In a separate inspection in Bengaluru on September 3, officials from the Department of Food Safety and Drug Administration closed and seized the kitchen at Chairman’s Club in the Dollars Colony area of Sahakaranagar after allegedly finding several violations.

Around 40 kg of expired chilli was found and seized during the inspection, officials said.

The department also flagged improper labelling of certain food products, unhygienic conditions in food preparation and storage areas, alleged use or storage of unauthorised artificial colours, and lapses in food handling and storage practices.

Officials also found vegetarian and non-vegetarian food products being stored together.

The department said inspections would continue across the state and that legal action would be taken against food establishments found violating food safety and hygiene norms.
