Mangaluru, Mar 23: Dakshina Kannada district is experiencing a steady rise in temperatures, with the mercury recently touching 39°C. With hot winds expected to intensify in the coming days, the health department has initiated precautionary measures to manage potential heatstroke cases.
Special arrangements have been made across government hospitals. At Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru, a dedicated five-bed ward has been set up for heat-related cases. Taluk hospitals in Beltangady, Sullia, Puttur, and Bantwal have each prepared separate treatment rooms with two beds, equipped with essential medicines, air conditioning, and emergency support facilities.
District Health Officer Dr. Thimmayya said steps are being taken to raise awareness, particularly among students. The health department will coordinate with the education department to educate school and college students on safety measures during heatwave conditions and prolonged exposure to sunlight.
He warned that children are especially vulnerable to extreme heat. Symptoms of heat-related illness may include dizziness, weakness, excessive sweating, headache, muscle cramps, nausea, rapid breathing, and in severe cases, seizures or loss of consciousness with body temperature exceeding 40.5°C.
Basic first aid measures include shifting the affected person to a cool place, wiping the body with a wet cloth, and allowing rest with legs slightly elevated. Fluids should be given if the person is conscious, while immediate medical attention is crucial in severe cases. Unconscious individuals should not be given food or drink.
Residents have been advised to take preventive measures such as avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, staying well-hydrated, and wearing light-coloured clothing. Health officials also caution against excessive consumption of sugary or carbonated drinks, which may contribute to dehydration. Regular breaks are recommended for those working outdoors.
