Mangaluru: In a major boost to India’s growing shipbuilding sector, Chowgule Shipyards on Monday delivered Frisian Future — a next-generation diesel-electric, wind-assisted cargo vessel — to Boomsma Shipping following successful sea trials at its Mangaluru facility.

The 8,500 DWT foreign-going general cargo vessel is the first ship built at the Mangaluru yard for an international client and marks a significant milestone under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

Sailing under the Netherlands flag, Frisian Future represents a new generation of environmentally responsible cargo vessels, designed to reduce emissions by nearly 30 percent compared to conventional ships. The vessel combines diesel-electric propulsion with wind-assisted technology, offering greater fuel efficiency and operational flexibility while meeting increasingly stringent international emission standards under IMO and EU regulations.

Classed with Lloyd’s Register and compliant with SOLAS, MARPOL and IMO Tier III norms, the ICE class 1B vessel features a forward accommodation design that maximises cargo space and improves efficiency in transporting project cargo.

Arjun Chowgule, Managing Director of the Chowgule Group, described the delivery as a landmark moment for the company and the region.

“This delivery demonstrates that the Mangaluru shipyard has evolved into a modern facility capable of building export-quality vessels that meet global standards. Karnataka and Mangaluru possess strong potential for shipbuilding, and we look forward to expanding on this foundation,” he said.

The Mangaluru shipyard currently supports more than 6,000 direct and indirect jobs, further strengthening the region’s role in India’s maritime and industrial growth.
