Doha: The Indian community in Qatar, led by Indian Ambassador Vipul, paid heartfelt tributes to the late Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, during a condolence meeting held on Wednesday. The gathering also conveyed condolences to Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the royal family, and the people of Qatar on the passing of the revered leader.

The condolence meeting, held at the Ashoka Hall of the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), was attended by a large number of Indian community members, community leaders, and officials from the Indian Embassy in Doha.

Organised by the Indian community’s apex bodies under the aegis of the Indian Embassy, the event witnessed an overwhelming turnout, with the hall and adjoining areas filled with mourners, reflecting the deep respect and affection the Indian community held for the late Father Amir.

The programme began with a minute’s silence in honour of the late leader. ICC General Secretary Abraham Joseph read a condolence message, highlighting Sheikh Hamad’s enduring legacy in shaping modern Qatar through his visionary leadership, generosity, wisdom, and compassion.

A short documentary showcasing the late Father Amir’s visits to India and his meetings with Indian leaders was also screened during the event.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Vipul said India and the Indian community in Qatar would always remember the warmth, affection, and support extended by Sheikh Hamad.

“I have heard many stories of his kindness and compassion towards ordinary people, particularly Indians, and witnessed his close association with India during his several visits,” the ambassador said.

Recalling his own interactions with the late Father Amir, Vipul said, “I had the privilege of attending meetings between our leaders and His Highness over the years. What stood out in every meeting was his genuine affection for India. He always spoke highly of the Indian community and held it in great esteem.”

The ambassador also noted that India observed a day of national mourning in honour of the late Father Amir, during which the national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings across the country and at Indian missions abroad, while official entertainment programmes were suspended.

He further mentioned that Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju had travelled to Qatar to personally convey India’s condolences to the Amir.

Presidents of the four apex Indian community organisations under the Indian Embassy also addressed the gathering. ICC President A.P. Manikantan, Indian Community Benevolent Forum President Shanavas Bava, Indian Sports Centre President E.P. Abdulrahman, and Indian Business and Professional Council President Taha Muhammed paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad’s visionary leadership, crediting him with transforming Qatar into a prosperous and globally respected nation.

They also recalled his affection for India and acknowledged the opportunities provided to the Indian community, which has played a significant role in Qatar’s development during his reign.
